Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) / Hull Identification Number (HIN)
What’s a VIN / HIN number and where do I find it?
The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or Hull Identification Number (HIN) serves as the unique identifier for a vehicle or vessel, similar to a serial number. It is used to verify history details for cars, vans, trucks, trailers, boats, yachts, and jet skis.
The VIN is typically located on the dashboard near the windshield, inside the driver-side door frame, or listed on the vehicle’s title, registration, and insurance documents.
The HIN is usually affixed or stamped into the back of the vessel’s hull, commonly referred to as the transom, typically on the upper right corner or beneath the swim platform.
Additionally, the VIN or HIN may be documented on state title records, registration papers, coast guard documentation (where applicable), and insurance paperwork. For vehicles and vessels manufactured in 1984 or later, federal regulations require these identification numbers to follow a standardized format. You may also refer to official transport or maritime authority records for verification.
